Malaysia's Shahriffuddin Ariffin kept his nerve on an exciting final day to claim his second Asian Development Tour (ADT) title in the USD150,000 PKNS Selangor Masters.

In a tense battle with Thai teenager Denwit Boriboonsub at Seri Selangor Golf Club, Shahriffuddin showed great composure to card a closing 70 for a nine-under-par 275 total and a two-shot victory.

Shahriffuddin and Dewnit had started the day tied for the lead and it soon turned into a matchplay battle as they fought tooth and nail for the win. At the turn, the Thai led by one shot with an outward 33 to Shahriffuddin's 34, but the Malaysian drew level when the Denwit three-putted the 10th hole for bogey.

Denwit pulled one shot clear with a birdie from 10 feet at the short par-four 11th and, after they traded pars at the par-three 12th, the tide seemed to shift in the Thai's favour. At the par-five 13th, Shahriffuddin pulled his drive way left and sent his second shot into a hazard after hitting a tree. The resulting double bogey saw the Malaysian trailing by three with five holes to go.

Both players missed the green at the tough par-three 14th, but only Shahriffuddin got up and down for par to reduce the deficit to two shots. The par-four 15th proved pivotal as the Malaysian drew level with a birdie from five feet, while Denwit three-putted for a two-shot swing.

At the par-four 16th, Shahriffuddin made another clutch par-save after missing the green to the right and pulled ahead by one when Denwit missed his short par putt. 

One shot ahead with two holes to go, Shahriffuddin parred his way home for a two-shot win as Denwit made bogey on the last hole after pulling his drive into the trees on the left and having to chip out.

"I'm really excited to get an ADT win here at Seri Selangor. It was really unexpected because I didn't know who was leading towards the end, I was focused on improving my score shot-by-shot," said Shahriffuddin, whose first ADT win came at the PGM Labuan Championship in 2018.

"I couldn't believe it at first, especially after the double bogey I had on the 13th," he added

Shahriffuddin dedicated the victory to his father, Ariffin Omar. "I owe this win and my career to my dad. I wouldn't be here today without all his dedication,"  noted the 23-year-old from Melaka.

The winner's cheque of USD26,250 catapulted Shahriffuddin four spots up the ADT Order of Merit to third place with USD46,280 from 12 starts.

A visibly disappointed Denwit, who's still only 18, took the loss in his stride. "I was pretty tired on the back nine and couldn't really control myself and my swing. But my game is going into the right direction. Sometimes it's just not your day," said the young Thai, who closed with a 73.

Denwit's runner-up performance moved him five spots up the ADT Order of Merit into seventh place with USD33,835.67. “I'm going to play all the remaining ADTs because I'm looking to improve my rankings and stay in the top 10 to gain my Asian Tour card," he noted.

Two-time Asian Tour winner Danny Chia closed with an even-par 71 which was good enough for the Malaysian veteran to share third place on six-under-par with Filipino Lloyd Jefferson Go, who also signed off with 71. Zimbabwean Kieran Vincent shot the final round low score of 66 to move up into fifth place on five-under-par.

ADT Order of Merit leader Suteepat Prateeptienchai of Thailand consolidated his position at the top with a 10th place finish on even-par. His season haul of USD60,628 puts him marginally ahead of compatriot Chonlatit Chuenboonngam (USD58,203), who finished T14 at Seri Selangor.

Jointly sanctioned with the Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Tour, the PKNS Selangor Masters is the 13th stop on the 2022 ADT season. The tournament was inaugurated in 2008 as an Asian Tour event and was last staged in 2014 when Thailand's Chapchai Nirat won at Seri Selangor.
