Casper Loh is one of the many young professionals making a name for himself on the Toyota Tour. Friendly, attentive, and great with people, Loh is more than just a talented golfer. Recently, Joe Carlos of the Toyota Tour joined him for 18 holes at Kelab Golf Seri Selangor to get to know him better.
1. You only turned pro this time last year. How has it been for you so far on the Toyota Tour?
I am definitely enjoying myself out here. I am so glad Toyota came on board and this has definitely elevated the tournament setup to a whole new level. I would say it is much more fun competing as a professional on the Toyota Tour than when competing as an amateur.
2. Are you surprised with how you've performed, 30th in the 2023 Order of Merit and currently 28th? Where do you hope to finish by end of the season?
No, my target last year was to finish inside the top 20 but it being my first year I wouldn't be too harsh on myself for finishing 30th. This year I would like to finish inside the top 10.
3. Just over a year as a professional but you've already competed on Asian Development Tour and Asian Tour events. What are your mid-to-long term goals as a professional golfer?
I am thinking of trying out both the Asian Tour and Japan Tour but my priority is set on making it to the Asian Tour first. Hopefully in the near future I can compete in one of the big tours.
4. What has been your most satisfying moment as a professional so far?
Most satisfying moment so far must be qualifying for my All-Thailand Tour card last year in December.
5. Who are your current sponsors?
Under Armour and Srixon
6. You started golf as a junior member at Sabah Golf & Country Club. Other notables from your club include Nicholas Fung, Ben Leong, Iain Steele and Aretha Pan. Describe the passion shared by the club's management and members alike in their pursuit for excellence.
The club management prides themselves on junior development, allowing juniors to fully utilise the club's facilities. Especially during the school holidays, they will try their best to host tournaments for juniors to compete.
7. Describe your relationship with these players and how they've helped your mental approach.
I am very fortunate to grow up having the privilege to watch them hone their skills in Sabah GCC. Both Ben and Nicholas are always very generous in giving me advice. Other notable past playing professionals who have helped me tremendously are Lam Yu Shuen and Alan Chin. They have always shared their past experiences with me and made sure I am always in the right state of mind to compete.
8. Do you have a full-time coach, or someone you look to for guidance and advice?
Yes, I am still working with Toshi, he has been my coach since I was 12. If I need any sort of guidance or advice, I know I can always turn to my seniors.
9. Who was mainly responsible for honing your game while at junior and amateur level?
I would have to credit my father for that, without him I do not think I would have the opportunity to be where I am today.
10. You are not a big hitter unlike some of your peers on the Toyota Tour. What do you do to be on par with them?
I try to play to the strength of my game, trying my best to navigate around the golf course the best way possible.
11. What would you say is the strongest department in your game?
I would have to say it is my wedge play and my putting.
12. Which course stands out on the Toyota Tour so far, and why?
I'd say Sabah GCC but that would be a biased answer. So I'll have to go for Forest City. It was one of the longest courses we played last year. I definitely enjoyed playing it, as the course set-up was in pristine and challenging condition.
13. What is your opinion of the Toyota Tour? What do you hope to see from the Tour in the future?
I can definitely see that there is more media coverage on the players ever since the Toyota and MST came on board in comparison to previous years. Ideally, I hope that we will have more events across the country, as it helps with the development of our local players and this will ultimately contribute to the growth of the game.
14. What is your favourite golf course?
Lion Lake in Guangzhou, China
15. Who are your favourite golfers?
Ludvig Aberg, Cameron Smith and Matt Fitzpatrick
16. What does Casper do on a normal day when it's not tournament week?
I'd go and play a round in the morning and get some practice in the afternoon before I head to the gym for some workouts in the evening.
17. What movies do you enjoy? Who are your favourite actors/actresses?
I actually love to binge watch series; I think so far my favourite has to be Peaky Blinders and Suits. The best actor in my opinion has to be Ryan Reynolds.
18. What do you think you would be today if you weren't a professional golfer?
I might have been a professional gamer, but I don't think my parents would have supported that idea. So I am more likely to be opening a dessert shop.
