Ervin Chang and Kemarol Baharin fired opening rounds of four-under-par 68 to share the first-round lead at the Toyota Tour Vios Cup.
The duo signed in similar scorecards comprising of five birdies against one bogey at the picturesque Templer Park Golf and Country Club and are currently holding a one-shot lead over Shariffuddin Ariffin.
One shot adrift and wrapping up the top five on the leaderboard are professionals M. Sasidaran, Tony Lam, and amateur Anson Yeo on two-under-par.
Chang, who recently returned from Phuket after playing in two Asian Development Tour events, felt his game slowly piecing together.
"It's been a while since I played some good golf, I struggled after the tournament from Saudi and it took some time to get back and try a few things out. Seems like everything was clicking today, so pretty happy about that," shared the 25-year-old.
Omitting a practice round yesterday and only walking nine holes around the course, Chang kept his focus on the greens and observed the game of his playing partners to refresh his memories of the challenging course.
"Templer Park always has tricky greens, so I worked around those more and didn't hit a single shot. But I did ask around my playing partners' and looked at where they were hitting and went from there," Chang said with a chuckle.
Hitting every fairway off the tee, Kemarol credited his drives to today's 68.
"The round was good as my driving was quite well, I managed to hit 100% of fairways! Which is something I haven't been able to do for the last couple of events," said Kemarol.
"It was a standard round, I hit it within one or two pins' length and drained some putts, so I'm hoping to hit better on my approaches tomorrow," he added.
In the Ladies' Championship, Geraldine Wong carded a round of even-par 72 to secure a one-shot lead over professional Durriyah Damian and amateur Tan Ying Ying. One shot further back in joint fourth position after shooting 74s are Aretha Pan, amateur Ng Jing Xuen, and Jocelyn Chee.
"The conditions were good out there, I just found the greens tricky. It was frustrating having a lot of six-footers for birdie but not making any of them. So I'll be working on sinking those putts tomorrow," said Wong.
The highlight of the day was when amateur Pang Hee Jie holed her tee shot at the short but tricky par-3 16th hole, becoming the first lady golfer ever, to score an ace on the Toyota Tour which is organised by the Professional Golf Malaysia and delivered by MST Golf.
