LIV Golf's Bryson Dechambeau signed in five birdies out of his last seven holes to take a one-shot lead over tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler on a weather-disrupted Thursday at Augusta National.
After a storm delayed the start of the year's first major by almost two hours, 2020 U.S. Open champion DeChambeau navigated through the softened but windy conditions and mixed eight birdies with one bogey for a seven-under-par 65.
Dechambaeau's lone bogey came at the par-four 9th where he three-putted from 70 feet, but the LIV Golf player bounced back in the second nine with a hot streak of birdies that he wrapped up with a 31-foot birdie putt on the 17th.
World number one Scottie Scheffler carded a bogey-free 66 to sit in second place, recording his lowest score in 17 rounds at The Masters. Scheffler was two-under-par through 11 holes and caught fire with four birdies in his back nine to stand one stroke behind Dechambeau.
Scottie Scheffler of The United States plays his tee shot on the fourth hole during the first round of the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club.
Due to the weather delay, 27 players were unable to complete round one with the horn blowing at 7:51 PM. The first round will resume at 7:50 AM on Friday, with the second round teeing off at 8 AM. Thursday late starters, including five-times champion Tiger Woods, 2023 runner-up Brooks Koepka and former winner Dustin Johnson, were among the few who did not finish their first rounds.
