Foong Zi Yu posted a three-under-par 69 at the Siam Country Club to be the leading Malaysian in tied tenth place following the first round of the 6th Women's Amateur Asia-Pacific.
The Lipscomb University freshman recorded five birdies against two bogeys to lie two shots behind joint leaders Wu Chun-Wei of Chinese Taipei and Thais Navaporn Soontreeyapas and Eila Galitsky.
"My game today has been fairly consistent overall. Like there isn't a certain part of my game that stands out today, so I would say it's all really manageable," said the 2023 SEA Games individual bronze medalist.
Asked if she has any ambitions heading into tomorrow, Foong shared, "To be honest, there are no expectations even before coming here. I guess it's just more towards being grateful I'm able to enjoy the lovely weather and great conditions."
The next best-placed Malaysian in T12th position on two-under-par 70 is debutant Sohniya Chandra Mohan. One shot adrift is third-time participant Ng Jing Xuen in T26 after carding in a one-under-par 73, followed by Pang Hee Jie in T32 on even-par 72.
Wang Xin Yao who teed off in the morning closed her first round with a five-over-par 77 to sit in T75, and wrapping up the Malaysian challenge is Charlayne Chong in T79 on six-over-par 78.
