Jeremiah Kim wins PGM MNRB Championship by one over Nicholas Fung, amateur Winnie Ng runs away with ladies' title
Jeremiah Kim Leun Kwang claimed his third PGM Tour title with a nail-biting one-shot victory over Nicholas Fung in the PGM MNRB Championship at Glenmarie Golf & Country Club.
Taking a one-shot lead over Fung into the third and final round, Kim carded a closing 69 for an 11-under-par total at Glenmarie's Garden Course. Fung also closed with 69 for a 10-under-par total, three shots ahead of fellow Sabahan and Asian Tour winner Ben Leong who carded 68.
It was an exciting finish indeed as Fung levelled the score with an outward 34 to Kim's 35. Two more birdies by Fung on 10 and 11 saw the Sabahan lead by two, but Kim caught up with two birdies of his own at 15 and 16 after a two-hour rain delay.
When Fung dropped a shot at the par-three-17th after failing to get up and down from off the green, Kim took a one-shot advantage to the par-four final hole. Both players missed makeable birdie putts on the last green and the RM21,000 winner's cheque was Kim's to savour.
"I had no expectations actually and I wasn't even sure I was going to play this week, to be honest. Good thing my girlfriend forced me to play! Yesterday was our first anniversary so I guess everything worked out," said Kim, who won two events in 2019 and was runner-up on the PGM Tour Order of Merit.
"The first two days I hit the ball well but putts weren't dropping as much as I would like to. Today was just the opposite. I hit the ball terribly but managed to grind it out and save a lot of pars," added the 27-year-old.
Zia IIzzuddeen Rashid closed with 69 to claim the best amateur prize in fourth place on six-under-par.
The ladies' event saw Winnie Ng emerge as a runaway winner after a closing 70 for a four-under-par total. The University of Washington senior finished seven shots ahead of fellow amateur Foong Zi Yu, who shot 77.
Aretha Pan ended her campaign with a 78 and was third on four-over-par, one shot clear of Dianne Luke. Pan claimed a RM7,000 cheque as the leading professional.
"Honestly, I had no expectations going into this week as my swing wasn't in the best shape. I just took it one shot at a time and hoped that some putts would drop, and they eventually did" said Ng, who heads back to the United States on September 7.
"I had a feeling that today would be my day if I kept the momentum going, just hit one shot at at time and keep making putts. I haven't won a single tournament since two and a half years ago, so it's been like a rollercoaster ride. This win really means a lot to me."
