Sabah Golf & Country Club gearing up for Toyota Tour Hilux Cup
The prestigious Toyota Tour's Hilux Cup returns to the Sabah Golf & Country Club (SGCC) for its second consecutive year, bringing excitement and fierce competition as Malaysia’s top golfers compete for the esteemed title.
Nicholas Fung, the local favourite, is ready to defend his title on familiar grounds starting Tuesday. With deep connections to SGCC, Fung will face strong competition from fellow SGCC product Ben Leong, who recently claimed victory at the Fortuner Cup in Sibu.
Adding to the competitive field, Galven Green, the current Order of Merit leader, will be paired with Fung for the initial two days.
Green’s impressive season, highlighted by wins at the Tun Ahmad Sarji Trophy and the Corolla Cross Cup at Glenmarie GCC, where he triumphed over Fung in a playoff, makes him a formidable challenger.
The tournament will also feature Vios Cup winner Paul San, Asian Tour regular Shahriffuddin Ariffin, and rookie Marcus Lim, who turned professional shortly before the Fortuner Cup. Lim, who competed as an amateur on the Toyota Tour last year and won the Supra Cup at the Mines, will be one to watch.
Continuous rains have softened the SGCC course, however, with dry weather predicted until Thursday evening, golfers will have the chance to perform under favourable conditions.
SGCC's demanding layout, featuring narrow fairways, strategic bunkers, and undulating greens, will require precision and strategic play.
Aretha Pan, the 2023 Toyota Tour Ladies’ Order of Merit winner, left a lasting impression last year when she competed against the men from the forward tees, finishing an impressive second. Pan, a local celebrity, draws on her extensive experience at SGCC.
“My experience from last year will definitely be an advantage,” said Pan. “I’ve played SGCC since I was young and know how it behaves in different conditions. It’s always helpful to have that familiarity. But golf is golf; every day is a new day I will try to play my best.
“The soft and wet conditions can be challenging. I’ve played in similar conditions before, so I need to adjust my strategy and club selection a bit and stay focused,” she added.
In addition to the main event, a record-breaking 93 children participated in the Toyota Tour Junior Clinic at the SGCC practice facility. Tour professionals like Casper Loh, Marcus Lim, Ben Leong, Aretha Pan, and Brandon Lai will assist, along with SGCC coaches Vivienne, Lam, and Fraser.
