Young talents Andrew Yap and Xingtong Chen clinch 48th Selangor Amateur Open men's and ladies' titles
Malaysian teen Andrew Yap and Singapore's Xingtong Chen were crowned the men's and ladies' champions of the 48th Peugeot Selangor Amateur Open held at Kelab Golf Negara Subang from November 28 to 30.
14-year-old Andrew Yap cruised to a wire-to-wire victory after shooting rounds of 69, 71 and 74. Pulling through with a closing round of two-over-par 74 to finish two-under-par 214 overall, Yap successfully earned his maiden amateur title with a comfortable five-shot win over Nateeshvar Anatah Gnash and Aiden Kei Ahmad Shaharud.
"Today was a little disappointing because of my driver - I couldn't find the fairways and that gave me quite a few difficult approach shots," said Yap who recorded a colourful scorecard of three birdies against three bogeys and one double bogey.
All in all, Yap was still all smiles when lifting the trophy.
"I've been working hard the past few months and it's pretty heartwarming to earn the title and I can't wait to see what next year will bring," noted Yap.
In fourth place on four-over-par 220 was Sarawakian Anson Yeo Boon Xiang, followed by Brayden Lee, Daniel Woz, and Maxwin Chiew Jian Weng in joint fifth position on seven-over-par 223.
Claiming the 48th Selangor Amateur Open ladies' title in a similar fashion was Singapore's Xingtong Chen. The 15-year-old carded rounds of 73, 72, 69 to win the trophy by 14 shots.
"It's been an up and down year, so to be able to have my first international win here in Malaysia is an honour," said Chen.
"My putting has been on point recently, and I'm still working on bringing the consistency of my game up," added the Singaporean.
In runner-up position on 12-over-par 228 was Wang Xin Yao and finishing one shot adrift in third place was nett category winner Nur Diana Syafiqah on 13-over-par 229.
Park Jae Min topped the 54-hole men's nett division with an 11-under-par 205 total while Dalia Tang secured the ladies' nett category with a two-day aggregate of seven-under-par 209.
